How to Measure for a Folding Dining Table in a Small Room

Measure the fixed room

Record wall lengths, door swings, radiator or vent locations, outlets and the path between the kitchen and seating area. Keep required access clear.

Mark the table footprint

Use removable tape to outline the closed and fully open table sizes. If the table has leaves or moving legs, include the space needed to operate them.

Add chair movement

Place a chair or a taped chair footprint at each intended seat. Make sure people can sit and stand without forcing another piece of furniture to move into a walkway.

Plan the folded state

Decide what the room does when the table is compact: work area, open circulation, play space or simply a less crowded dining zone. A folding mechanism creates value only if the reclaimed space serves a real purpose.
