Flying With a Pet Carrier: What to Check Before You Book

Flying with a pet requires two separate checks: airport security procedures and the operating airline’s pet policy. A carrier passing through security does not mean that every airline or aircraft will accept it in the cabin.

1. Check the operating airline before buying a carrier

Airlines set their own rules for in-cabin pets, including carrier dimensions, pet eligibility, route restrictions, fees and seat limitations. Aircraft can also change, so recheck the policy before each trip.

Review the current official policies for your airline—for example, American Airlines pet travel and Delta pet travel.

2. Confirm that the carrier fits the pet

Your pet needs an appropriate fit inside the closed carrier. Use actual measurements instead of assuming that a carrier labeled “small” or “medium” will work.

3. Confirm under-seat or aircraft-specific limits

Cabin carriers generally need to fit in the space required by the airline. Some airlines publish different rules for hard-sided and soft-sided carriers, and restrictions can vary by aircraft or cabin. If the airline tells you to contact reservations for aircraft-specific dimensions, do that before travel.

4. Understand the TSA screening step

TSA security screening is not a universal product-approval program for pet carriers. TSA guidance says pets are removed from their carrying cases for screening while the empty carrier is screened separately. Review current TSA travel guidance before departure.

5. Recheck the itinerary, not just the ticketing airline

If a flight is operated by a partner airline, the operating carrier’s rules may apply. Connections can also introduce a different aircraft with different under-seat space.

6. Do not rely on an “airline-approved” product label

No generic marketing phrase can guarantee acceptance on every airline, aircraft, route or seat. The final check should always use the current operating-airline policy for your exact trip.
