How to Introduce Your Dog to a New Sofa Bed

Some dogs use new furniture immediately; others need time. A calm introduction works better than forcing the dog onto the sofa. Let the new item become part of the room and make it easy for the dog to investigate at their own pace.

Step 1: Put it in a familiar location

Start near an existing resting area or somewhere the dog already chooses to relax. Keep the surrounding floor clear and stable.

Step 2: Add familiar scent

Place a familiar blanket or approved toy on the sofa if the product care instructions allow it. Familiar scent can make a new surface feel less unfamiliar.

Step 3: Reward voluntary interest

Use calm praise or a small reward when the dog approaches, sniffs or rests on the sofa voluntarily. Avoid physically placing or holding the dog on the furniture.

Step 4: Keep the experience low-pressure

Do not turn every approach into a training session. Let the dog leave whenever they want. Some pets need several days to accept a new surface.

Step 5: Troubleshoot the setup

• If the dog avoids the sofa, check whether the entry height feels difficult.
• If it slides, verify the floor and base are stable.
• If the dog prefers another location, try moving the sofa.
• If pain or mobility seems to affect access, consult a veterinarian.

Keep expectations realistic

No introduction technique guarantees that every dog will prefer a particular bed. The goal is to make the new sofa safe, familiar and optional.
