Hanging a full length mirror on the wall is one of the most impactful home improvements you can make — and one of the most permanent. Get it right and you'll have a secure, perfectly positioned mirror for years. Get it wrong and you're looking at a crooked mirror, damaged walls, or worse, a fallen mirror. What You'll Need Before You Start

Stud finder — essential for mirrors over 20 lbs
Pencil — for marking stud locations and mounting points
Tape measure — for height and centering
Level (spirit level or laser level) — for perfectly straight mounting
Power drill — for pilot holes
Drill bits — sized to your mounting hardware
Screwdriver — for final tightening
Mounting hardware — the Viva Elite Full Length Wall Mirror includes all hardware in the box
A second person — strongly recommended for mirrors over 20 lbs

Step 1: Choose Your Wall & Location

Before you pick up a drill, decide exactly where the mirror will live.

Wall type: Drywall over wood studs is the standard. Concrete, brick, and plaster walls require different anchors — check your wall type before buying hardware.
Location logic: Beside the wardrobe for a dressing mirror, opposite a window for light amplification, or on the main wall as a focal point.
Check what's behind the wall: Avoid walls with plumbing or electrical runs. If in doubt, use a multi-scanner that detects pipes and wires as well as studs.
Clearance: Leave at least 6" of wall space on each side of the mirror for visual breathing room.

Step 2: Find Your Wall Studs

This is the most important step for heavy mirrors. The Viva Elite weighs 28.66 lbs — it must be mounted into studs, not just drywall.

Use a stud finder: Run it slowly across the wall at mounting height. Mark each stud edge with a pencil.
Standard stud spacing: 16" on center in most US homes (sometimes 24"). Once you find one stud, the next is 16" away.
Confirm with a nail: Drive a small finish nail at the marked location to confirm the stud. If it hits solid wood, you're in the right place.
No stud where you need it? Use heavy-duty toggle bolts rated for the mirror's weight. For the Viva Elite (28.66 lbs), use toggles rated for at least 50 lbs each.

Step 3: Determine the Mounting Height

Where you mount the mirror determines how useful it is. Here's how to get the height right:

Standard rule: The center of the mirror should be at eye level — approximately 57–60" from the floor for average adult height.
For a 47.6" mirror: If you want the center at 58", the top of the mirror will be at 58" + 23.8" = 81.8" from the floor, and the bottom at 58" − 23.8" = 34.2" from the floor.
Household height variation: If there's a significant height difference between household members, mount slightly lower (center at 56–57") to work for everyone.
Entryway exception: In an entryway, mount slightly lower so the bottom of the mirror is 6–12" from the floor — you want to see your shoes.

Step 4: Mark Your Mounting Points

Hold the mirror against the wall (with a helper) at the desired height. Mark the top center lightly with a pencil.
Measure from the top of the mirror to the mounting hardware on the back. Transfer this measurement to the wall — this is where your screws go.
Use a level to ensure your mounting points are perfectly horizontal. Even 1–2mm off will be visible once the mirror is hung.
Double-check centering: Measure from each side of the mirror to the nearest wall edge or reference point to confirm it's centered where you want it.

Step 5: Drill Pilot Holes

Select the right drill bit: Slightly smaller than your screw diameter for wood studs; sized to your anchor for drywall.
Drill straight: Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall. An angled pilot hole creates an angled screw, which reduces holding strength.
Depth: For studs, drill at least 1" into the stud beyond the drywall. For anchors, follow the anchor manufacturer's instructions.
Clean the hole: Remove dust from the pilot hole before inserting anchors or screws.

Step 6: Install the Mounting Hardware

Insert anchors (if using drywall anchors) flush with the wall surface.
Drive screws into studs or anchors, leaving the screw head protruding slightly — the mirror's hanging hardware will hook onto it.
Check the level again after installing hardware. Screws can shift slightly during installation.
Viva Elite hardware: Follow the included instruction sheet for the specific bracket placement and screw depth for this mirror.

Step 7: Hang the Mirror

With a helper: One person holds the mirror, one guides it onto the mounting hardware.
Engage the hardware: Lower the mirror onto the wall brackets or hooks. You should feel it seat securely.
Check level immediately: Place a level on the top edge of the mirror. If it's off, most mounting systems allow micro-adjustment.
Test stability: Gently push the mirror from side to side and top to bottom. It should not move or wobble.

Step 8: Final Safety Check

Pull test: Gently pull the bottom of the mirror away from the wall. It should not move.
Check all screws: Ensure every screw is fully tightened. Loose screws are the most common cause of mirror failure over time.
Add a safety strap: For extra security (especially in earthquake-prone areas or households with children), add an anti-tip furniture strap from the top of the mirror to a wall stud.
6-month check: Inspect all mounting hardware every 6 months. Screws can loosen over time, especially in high-traffic areas.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mounting into drywall only: For mirrors over 15 lbs, always use studs or heavy-duty anchors rated for the weight.
Skipping the level: A mirror that's 2–3mm off level is visibly crooked. Always check with a level before and after hanging.
Hanging alone: A 28+ lb mirror is a two-person job. Don't risk dropping it.
Wrong mounting height: Measure twice, drill once. Patching and re-drilling is avoidable with careful planning.
Ignoring what's behind the wall: Always scan for pipes and electrical before drilling.
