Adjustable bed base with head section raised during setup

How to Set Up an Adjustable Bed Base: A Manual-First Guide

Adjustable-bed setup varies by model, so the safest starting point is the instruction manual packed with the exact base—not a generic online sequence. The steps below help you prepare the room and avoid common mistakes without assuming a particular leg height, remote-pairing method, electrical input or accessory list.

Before opening the box

  • Measure the room, delivery path, doors, hallways and stairs.
  • Confirm the selected base size matches the mattress.
  • Confirm the mattress is approved for adjustable-base use.
  • Identify a suitable outlet and cable route away from moving parts.
  • Arrange adequate lifting help for the weight stated on the package or manual.

Step 1: Verify the model and contents

Match the model or SKU on the package to the order. Use the manual’s parts list to verify the base, controller, power components, legs or brackets if applicable, and required hardware before discarding packaging.

Step 2: Protect the floor and position the base safely

Use a clean, padded work area and follow the manufacturer’s orientation instructions. Do not flip, fold, lift or carry the base from a point the manual does not identify as safe.

Step 3: Install only the components specified

Attach legs, retainers, brackets, power supplies and other parts exactly as shown for the model. Avoid improvising with hardware from another bed or assuming every adjustable base is tool-free.

Step 4: Place the base in its final operating area

Leave clearance around moving sections, nearby furniture, walls and cables. If the base will sit inside a decorative frame, use our compatibility guide before powering the unit.

Step 5: Connect power according to the rating label

Follow the exact electrical instructions. Keep the cord free from pinch points and do not use an adapter or extension arrangement unless the manufacturer permits it.

Step 6: Set up the controller

Some remotes arrive ready to use; others require batteries, pairing or another initialization step. Follow the instructions for the exact model instead of using a generic pairing sequence.

Step 7: Test movement before adding the mattress

With the movement area clear, test each documented function briefly and watch the frame, cords and nearby objects. Stop if movement is obstructed, unusually noisy or inconsistent with the manual.

Step 8: Add the compatible mattress and test again

Center the mattress as instructed and install any mattress retainer specified for the model. Repeat a controlled function test and make sure the mattress flexes without catching on nearby furniture.

Current Viva reference

Viva’s current ACTIVE Queen Adjustable Bed Base lists head and foot incline, a wireless remote, zero-gravity preset, massage, USB ports and under-bed lighting. Exact package contents, electrical details, leg configuration, setup steps and controller behavior should still be checked against the exact current manual.

Previously featured Viva multi-size and Black Queen adjustable-base listings are not currently active, so this setup guide no longer presents their old instructions or specifications as current.

Frequently asked questions

How long does setup take?

It varies by model, room access and assembly requirements. Use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than a universal time estimate.

Can one person set up an adjustable base?

Use the product’s listed weight and lifting instructions to determine how much help is required. Powered bases can be heavy and awkward.

Should I use a box spring?

Follow the base and mattress instructions. Do not add another foundation unless both manufacturers approve the combination.
