If a mattress is structurally sound but feels firmer than you prefer, adding a foam topper can change the upper surface without replacing the mattress. The change may be noticeable, but it should not be described as guaranteed pain relief or a substitute for a mattress that is physically worn out.
First Decide Whether the Mattress Is Still Usable
A topper is most appropriate when the underlying mattress remains supportive and intact. It cannot repair deep sagging, broken springs, a damaged foundation, mold or another structural problem.

Check the Bed Height and Sheets
Adding a topper changes the total height of the bed. Confirm fitted-sheet pocket depth, frame clearance and whether the finished bed height remains comfortable for normal use.
Allow Compressed Foam to Recover
The current Viva source lists compressed packaging and 24-hour expansion wording. Give the topper time and ventilation to recover according to the included instructions before judging the finished shape.
