Outdoor Shower Maintenance Guide: Keep It Looking New

• ✔ Wipe down the column: Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the entire stainless steel column, shower arm, and fittings. This removes water spots, sunscreen residue, and chlorine deposits before they build up.
• ✔ Water spots: If water spots are visible, dampen a soft cloth with white vinegar (undiluted) and wipe in the direction of the grain. Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth. Do not use circular motions — always wipe with the grain of the brushed finish.
• ✔ Check connections: Briefly check the hose connection and all threaded joints for any drips. Hand-tighten any connection that has loosened.
• ✔ Coastal locations: If within 1km of the ocean, rinse the column with fresh water after each use or at minimum weekly. Salt deposits accelerate surface oxidation even on 304 stainless steel.

What NOT to use on stainless steel:

• ✘ Steel wool or abrasive scrubbers (scratch the surface)
• ✘ Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners (can cause pitting)
• ✘ Circular scrubbing motions (create visible scratches against the grain)
• ✘ Harsh chemical degreasers (strip the passive oxide layer)

• ✔ Rinse after use: After each shower session, briefly rinse the teak base with clean water to remove chlorine, sunscreen, soap residue, and debris. This single habit extends the life and appearance of the teak significantly.
• ✔ Allow to dry: Position the base where it receives airflow between uses. Teak is water-resistant but benefits from drying between wet cycles to prevent mold in humid climates.
• ✔ Monthly brush: Use a soft-bristle brush (a nail brush or vegetable brush works well) to scrub between the teak slats with clean water. This removes debris and prevents buildup in the drainage gaps.
• ✔ Color check: Note whether the teak is maintaining its honey tone or beginning to grey. If you want to maintain the honey tone, plan an annual oiling (see Annual Maintenance below). If you prefer the natural silver-grey patina, no action is needed.

Stainless Steel Column — Annual:

• ✔ Deep clean: Apply a dedicated stainless steel cleaner (Bar Keepers Friend, Weiman, or similar) with a soft cloth. Work in the direction of the grain. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely.
• ✔ Inspect all connections: Hand-tighten all threaded connections — column sections, shower arm, rain head, hand spray, and hose inlet. Check for any mineral buildup at the hose connection and clean with white vinegar if needed.
• ✔ Protective coating (optional): Apply a thin coat of car wax or dedicated stainless steel protectant to the column. This creates a hydrophobic layer that repels water and reduces water spot formation. Buff to a light sheen with a microfiber cloth.
• ✔ Coastal locations: Apply stainless steel protectant annually as standard practice. Consider upgrading to 316 marine grade stainless if surface oxidation is occurring despite regular maintenance.

FSC Teak Base — Annual (if maintaining honey tone):

• ✔ Step 1 — Clean: Apply teak cleaner (available at marine supply stores, West Marine, or Amazon) to the base with a brush. Work into the grain and between the slats. Allow to sit for 5–10 minutes. Scrub with a medium-bristle brush and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to dry completely (24–48 hours in sun).
• ✔ Step 2 — Sand (if needed): If the surface feels rough or has raised grain, lightly sand with 120-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
• ✔ Step 3 — Apply teak oil: Apply teak oil (Semco, Deks Olje, or similar) with a clean cloth or brush, working into the grain. Apply a thin, even coat. Allow to penetrate for 15–20 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Allow 24 hours to dry before use.
• ✔ Frequency: Once per year is sufficient for most climates. In very sunny or very wet climates, twice per year (spring and fall) may be beneficial.

FSC Teak Base — Annual (if allowing natural patina):

• ✔ No oiling required. The silver-grey patina is a natural, accepted finish that does not affect the structural integrity or water resistance of the teak.
• ✔ Annual clean with teak cleaner and a brush is still recommended to remove any mold, mildew, or deep-seated debris.

Winterize before the first freeze of the season. Water left in the column can freeze, expand, and damage internal fittings.

• ✔ Step 1 — Disconnect water supply: Turn off the outdoor tap and disconnect the hose from the shower inlet. Drain the hose completely and store indoors or coil loosely in a sheltered location.
• ✔ Step 2 — Drain the column: Open the foot wash spigot, turn the diverter to the rain head position, and turn the diverter to the hand spray position — cycling through all outlets allows any remaining water to drain from the internal passages. Tilt the column slightly if needed to ensure complete drainage.
• ✔ Step 3 — Dry the rain head and hand spray: Remove the rain head if possible and shake out any remaining water. Allow both the rain head and hand spray to air dry completely before storage or covering.
• ✔ Step 4 — Cover or disassemble:
  • ✔ Option A — Cover in place: Leave the shower assembled and cover with a weatherproof outdoor furniture cover. Secure the cover against wind. This is the simplest option for mild winters.
  • ✔ Option B — Disassemble for storage: The Viva Cascade's tool-free design allows full disassembly in 10–15 minutes. Store the column sections, shower arm, and fittings indoors (garage, shed, or basement). This is recommended for harsh winters with heavy snow or ice.
• ✔ Step 5 — Teak base: The FSC-certified teak base can remain outdoors year-round in most climates. In harsh winters, store indoors or cover with a breathable cover (avoid non-breathable plastic, which traps moisture). Apply teak oil in spring if maintaining the honey tone.
• ✔ Spring setup: Reassemble (if disassembled), reconnect to the outdoor tap, and test all connections. Check for any drips and hand-tighten as needed. Ready to use in 15 minutes.

• ✔ Water spots on stainless steel: Wipe with white vinegar on a soft cloth, in the direction of the grain. Rinse and dry. For stubborn spots, use Bar Keepers Friend (powder form) with a damp cloth — rinse thoroughly.
• ✔ Surface rust spots (tea staining): Small rust-colored spots on stainless steel are usually surface contamination (iron particles from nearby metal, not the stainless itself). Clean with Bar Keepers Friend or a dedicated stainless steel rust remover. If rust persists, the column may have been contaminated by contact with carbon steel — clean thoroughly and apply a protective coating.
• ✔ Teak turning grey: Normal weathering. If you want to restore the honey tone, clean with teak cleaner and apply teak oil (see Annual Maintenance). If you prefer the grey patina, no action needed.
• ✔ Mold or mildew on teak: Clean with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach : 10 parts water) and a stiff brush. Scrub between the slats. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to dry completely. Apply teak oil after cleaning if maintaining the honey tone.
• ✔ Drip at hose connection: Hand-tighten the connection. If still dripping, wrap 2–3 layers of PTFE (plumber's) tape around the male thread before reconnecting. PTFE tape costs under $2 at any hardware store.
• ✔ Low water pressure: Check that the outdoor tap is fully open and the hose is not kinked. Clean the shower head aerator if mineral buildup is restricting flow — unscrew the aerator, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse, and reinstall.
• ✔ Diverter stiff or not switching: Apply a small amount of silicone grease (not petroleum-based) to the diverter valve stem. Work the diverter back and forth several times to distribute the grease.
• ✔ Column wobbles: Re-adjust the four leveling feet until all four contact the surface evenly. Ensure the base collar is hand-tightened fully.
• ✔ Teak slats cracking: Caused by prolonged UV exposure without oiling in very dry climates. Sand lightly with 120-grit sandpaper, apply teak oil generously, and allow to penetrate fully. Increase oiling frequency to twice per year in very dry or sunny climates.
