A smart bird feeder and a regular bird feeder both provide a feeding station. The difference is whether you want a connected camera and are willing to manage the extra technology that comes with it.

Observation
A smart feeder can position a camera close to the feeding area, making it possible to capture views that are difficult to get from a window without standing close to visiting birds.
A regular feeder has no integrated camera, but it may be simpler if you prefer binoculars, a separate camera or in-person observation.
AI Identification
Some smart feeders use AI-assisted species recognition, but accuracy, supported species and subscription models vary. The current Viva source does not publish a recognition-accuracy guarantee or service details.

Power

Viva’s smart feeder is identified as solar powered, but its battery capacity, panel output, required sun exposure and backup charging method are not currently documented. Solar should not be interpreted as maintenance-free power.
Connectivity
A regular feeder does not depend on Wi-Fi. A connected feeder may depend on signal quality and app/service availability for some features.
Viva identifies Wi-Fi connectivity but does not currently publish the supported Wi-Fi band or offline behavior.
Weather and Maintenance
Both types require normal feeder cleaning and dry feed. A smart feeder also has electronics, lenses and power/connectivity components that must be maintained according to the exact instructions.
The current Viva source does not publish an IP/weather rating, so all-season weatherproofing is not assumed.
Privacy
A regular feeder has no camera. A smart feeder should be positioned so the camera observes the feeder area rather than neighboring private spaces. App security and account settings are another layer to manage.
