Nightstand Lamp Size Finder

Check whether a lamp can fit your bedside surface and work from bed—without relying on a universal decorating ratio.

You will need: a tape measure, the lamp's verified dimensions, and the items that normally stay on your nightstand.

Step 1: Find the usable surface

Measure the width and depth that remain after placing essentials such as a phone, water glass, book, clock, or charging dock. Use this usable area—not the full furniture dimensions—for the fit check.

Your notes: usable width ___ in. × usable depth ___ in.

Step 2: Check the base

The full base sits inside the usable area

Continue. Leave enough clearance to use drawers and reach bedside essentials without repeatedly bumping the lamp.

The base overhangs or crowds essentials

This lamp does not pass the current surface-fit check. Compare a narrower base, a wall-mounted option, or a different bedside layout.

Step 3: Check the shade and working envelope

The shade may be wider than the base. Adjustable arms or shades also need room to move. Confirm they will not collide with the headboard, wall, curtains, shelving, or objects on the table.

Your notes: widest verified point ___ in.; movement clearance ___ in.

Step 4: Check the light from bed

Lie or sit in the normal position. The light should support the intended activity without exposing an uncomfortable bright source at your usual viewing angle. Lamp height alone cannot prove this because shade form, opacity, bulb position, mattress height, and user position all matter.

Step 5: Check reach and power

  • Can the control be reached comfortably from bed?
  • Does the cord reach the outlet without crossing a walking path?
  • Will the cord interfere with drawers, bedding, curtains, or an adjustable bed?
  • If rechargeable, are charging requirements and access practical?

Your result

Likely fit

The base is fully supported, the shade clears nearby objects, the control is reachable, the light is comfortable from bed, and power routing is practical. Confirm the exact live product details before ordering.

Needs another layout test

The lamp fits physically, but an everyday item, drawer, shade, control, or cord creates friction. Move existing objects or test another position before purchasing.

Poor fit for this surface

The base is unsupported, the shade collides, glare is uncomfortable, or power routing is unsafe. Compare a smaller footprint or a properly verified wall-light alternative.
