Picture Light Placement Helper

Use this pre-install check to choose a starting position, test coverage and glare, and preserve charging or adjustment access before drilling.

Important: A measurement such as 6–7 inches above the frame is only a traditional starting test. Fixture projection, beam spread, artwork scale, glazing and viewing position determine the final placement.

Step 1: Finalize the artwork position

Place or mock up the complete framed artwork first. Measure the full framed width and mark its horizontal center.

Step 2: Mark a temporary starting point

Center one fixture over one artwork as the default starting composition. Use removable tape to test a position a few inches above the frame without drilling.

Step 3: Check the complete coverage

The artwork is covered evenly

Continue to glare and clearance checks. Do not judge coverage only from directly beneath the fixture.

The top is bright but the lower area is dark

Test a change in height, projection or light direction. A different fixture may be needed if optical coverage cannot reach the full piece.

Step 4: Check glare from real positions

View the artwork from the room entrance, sofa, bed, hallway approach or other normal sightlines. Adjust the test position if glass or acrylic reflects the source toward the viewer.

Step 5: Check physical clearance

  • Can an adjustable arm move without touching the frame, shelf, curtain or ceiling?
  • Does the fixture project into a hallway or walking path?
  • Can a rechargeable component be removed or accessed easily?
  • Does the exact mounting method suit the wall material and lease requirements?

Step 6: Decide whether the fixture matches the job

A decorative rechargeable sconce can provide picture-light-style accent lighting when it offers useful direction and coverage. Sensitive or valuable art may require specialized conservation lighting.
