Modern bathroom showing a vanity and medicine cabinet as a coordinated storage zone

Bathroom Vanity + Medicine Cabinet: Storage, Height & Lighting Guide

A bathroom vanity and medicine cabinet can work as one coordinated storage zone, but the layout should be planned around plumbing, mirror height, door movement and the fixtures already in the room.

Start with the vanity footprint

Measure the wall width, depth available in front of the vanity, plumbing location and door clearance. If the vanity is replacing an existing unit, confirm whether the new cabinet can work with the current drain and supply positions or whether professional plumbing changes are needed.

Plan the medicine cabinet separately

Check whether the cabinet is surface-mounted or recessed. Recessed installation can involve wall framing, wiring or hidden utilities and should not be treated as a simple cutout project without inspecting the wall first.

Coordinate mirror and faucet height

Position the cabinet so the mirror is usable for the people in the home while leaving appropriate clearance above the faucet and backsplash. Exact placement depends on cabinet dimensions, sink configuration and local installation requirements.

Keep lighting functional

Lighting should illuminate the face without relying on unsupported claims such as “perfect makeup lighting.” If a medicine cabinet includes LEDs, outlets, defogging or other electrical features, verify the exact rating and installation instructions for that model and bathroom location.

If the lighting is a separate wall-mounted fixture rather than part of the cabinet or mirror, use Viva’s Bathroom Vanity Lighting Guide to compare fixture size, placement, bulb or LED systems and bathroom-location ratings.

Storage planning checklist

  • Vanity width and depth
  • Drawer and door swing
  • Plumbing clearance
  • Medicine-cabinet mounting type
  • Mirror viewing height
  • Documented electrical features

The goal is a bathroom that stores daily items where they are used while keeping the counter easier to reset.
