Adjustable bed base frame showing motor and movable components

How to Move an Adjustable Bed Base Safely

Moving an adjustable bed base requires more planning than moving a simple platform frame because the base can contain motors, wiring, controls, hinges and removable components. Follow the exact model’s moving or disassembly instructions and avoid generic rules about transport orientation or disassembly.

Before you start

  • Find the exact manual and model number.
  • Photograph the assembled base, cable routing, leg setup and controller.
  • Measure doors, stairs, hallways, elevators and the new room.
  • Arrange enough lifting help based on the product’s stated weight.
  • Prepare moving blankets, labeled bags, straps and suitable moving equipment if appropriate.

Step 1: Return the base to the position specified for moving

Many powered bases are prepared for moving in a flat position, but follow the exact manual. Do not force a section manually or move the frame while a motor is operating.

Step 2: Remove the mattress and loose accessories

Move the mattress separately. Remove or secure remotes, retainers, brackets, power supplies and other detachable items as directed. Label hardware by location.

Step 3: Disconnect power

Unplug the base according to the manual and secure the cord so it cannot drag, snag or be crushed. Do not pull a plug by the cable.

Step 4: Disassemble only what the manufacturer allows

Some legs, brackets or frame sections may be removable; others may not be intended for routine disassembly. Do not remove motor housings, electrical parts, structural fasteners or wiring simply to make the unit lighter unless the manual instructs you to do so.

Step 5: Protect high-risk areas

Use padding around corners, control boxes, exposed connectors and finished surfaces. Avoid placing tape directly on upholstery or finishes if it may leave residue or pull fibers.

Step 6: Carry and transport according to the manual

Use proper lifting technique and enough people for the stated weight. Do not drag the base by a motor, cable, moving arm, upholstery panel or unsupported edge.

Step 7: Reassemble in the new room

Reinstall only the components removed during preparation, route cables as documented, and position the base with adequate movement clearance and outlet access.

Step 8: Test before normal use

With the area clear, test documented functions briefly before placing the mattress, then test again with the compatible mattress installed. Stop if anything binds, rubs, pulls on a cable or behaves differently from the manual.

Current Viva reference

Viva’s current ACTIVE Queen Adjustable Bed Base lists head and foot incline, wireless remote, zero-gravity preset, massage, USB ports and under-bed lighting. Its exact moving, disassembly, leg and transport instructions still need to come from the current model manual.

Older Viva multi-size and Black Queen adjustable-base listings are not currently active, so this moving guide no longer directs readers to those PDPs.

For setup after the move, see How to Set Up an Adjustable Bed Base.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an adjustable base with the mattress on it?

Follow the exact manufacturer instructions. Moving the mattress separately is often more manageable, but the model manual should control the process.

Can I stand an adjustable base upright in a truck?

Do not use a universal rule. Transport orientation should follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

Should I hire professional movers?

Consider professional help when product weight, stairs, narrow access or unfamiliar disassembly makes safe handling difficult.
